7 Ways to Create a Culture that Supports Innovation

I led a workshop last week for a well known national organization that was exploring how to promote healthy innovation management throughout many of its member organizations. These seven topics arose as the single most important:

  1. Inclusion and empowerment  –  welcoming different viewpoints and making it easy for everyone to contribute
  2. Transparency – making it easy to see how new ideas were culled
  3. Increasing the tolerance for failure
  4. Building trust
  5. Resourcing new ideas
  6. Building cross-department unity, prioritizing initiatives that were the same across the organization
  7. Managing the work program so that people can focus their efforts
