I Propose a New Discipline of Collaborative Leadership

Shouldn’t there be a discipline that teaches leaders how to engage people effectively to work together? Many will say it already exists, that leaders have to excel at enrolling others and getting them to contribute. But, leadership in general terms concentrates primarily on individual performance as if it were the source.

I have worked at organizations that include World Bank, Shell, NASA, Peace Corps, and many other world-class agencies. All of them understand the power of collaborative leadership, but not one requires their leaders to develop collaborative competencies to excel at climbing the ranks. Every one requires it indirectly – i.e., success is impossible without it. But, none are explicit in the  requirement.

What are you doing to ensure your collaborative skills are sharp and well-developed? How are you staying abreast of new developments?
